Maria Inkila of shower enclosure manufacturer Hüppe explains how the company has reviewed and enhanced its design strategy
DESIGNING a product
that many people look straight through is a challenge from the start. It may seem that a shower enclosure is a glass box whose function is simply to contain water but the design element is becoming more and more crucial. Traditionally, the advice given on how to choose an enclosure is to decide first of all if it needs to be a fish tank - absolutely water-tight - in which case it (still) needs to be fully framed. The choice of framed or frameless then impacts on what shape and size of enclosure is chosen (even slender profiles give the enclosure a different look) and the enclosure’s location in the bathroom also dictates if it should be a corner, recess, stand-alone or over-bath installation.
PURE ELEGANCE To streamline and simplify the selection process, Hüppe recently conducted a thorough review of its design strategy and the outcome was a new, innovative, design-led approach to choosing a shower enclosure in which all products are based on one of two fundamental styles – Pure and Elegance – each offering a range of framed and frameless products. These design styles represent linear and geometric forms as well as softer, flowing lines, thereby ensuring a design solution is available for every bathroom. Design Pure offers clean, straight lines for the ultra- contemporary look and feel. Design Elegance has a more fluid form, combining rounded softness with luxury. This new design-led approach also enables designers to choose enclosures to suit other elements of the design, such as sanitary ware and brass ware shapes.
DESIGN TEST Hüppe has also created a Design Test, a new, online consulting tool available on its website (
www.hueppe.com). Clicking in response to each question will result in a product recommendation that corresponds to the design preferences of the user. Simply click ‘Start’ and choose the preferred image in response to each of the seven questions. The tool then reveals the user’s personal design style.
