complementing one another. This has to do with the fact that products are becoming more and more complex and still need to be easy to use. Equally, it is very important that new
products fit in well with existing product ranges and express our client’s company culture. We are working on these interfaces now more than ever before.
DESIGNER: WHY IS GERMAN DESIGN SO SUCCESSFUL AROUND THE WORLD? WHAT FACTORS DO YOU BELIEVE MAKE IT SO INTERNATIONALLY APPRECIATED AND RESPECTED? HAUG: People have long attributed a high degree of functionality but little emotion to German design. Luckily this has changed, and I think Phoenix Design has contributed to that. However, the core values such as reliability, ergonomics, quality and innovation still remain the same. The success of German design also
has its roots in its orientation towards durability and economic success: What do people need? What makes sense? What is sustainable? As designers we are constantly thinking about these questions and are very
thorough in our work. This certainly is the success story of ‘designed in Germany’ and in the end, also of Phoenix Design.
DESIGNER: HOW IS TECHNOLOGY CHANGING WHAT IS POSSIBLE IN BRINGING SOME OF YOUR DESIGN IDEAS TO REALITY? HAUG: We are currently facing huge technical changes across all fields. Products are becoming more and more complex and combine several functions. Or they function as part of a larger product. Nowadays for example, a light is part
of a system which can be linked up with the whole building services. Or a fireplace is part of a heating system. In terms of how this affects our work, it means that we need to have competences on these interfaces. A design studio today needs to take a multi- disciplinary approach if it wants to meet these requirements.

DESIGNER: WHAT NEW PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW, AND ARE THERE ANY NEW PRODUCT AREAS YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON IN THE FUTURE THAT YOU HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED WITH SO FAR? HAUG: The user interface design area is a growing discipline at our studio. During the past years, however, we have positioned ourselves well in various fields, such as medical technology, the design of light systems and contract furniture. There is hardly any product we have not designed yet. Apart from that, however, it is always fascinating to develop a new shower head or a bathroom mixer - and being able to create some new interest in a particular type of product. designer
