Hotpoint’s latest product launch revealed the latest in a long line of creations from designer Makio Hasuike. Martin Allen-Smith spoke to him about his latest work and his visions for the future of kitchen technology
Japanese-born industrial designer Makio Hasuike is the Hotpoint product designer across all categories. With designs that stand for style, functionality and comfort, they are the result of a lot of an in-depth study into the lifestyle of the consumer, built up over 40 years of creating ideas for the home and workplace.
When asked what a good design consists of, Hasuike says: “I think you could defi ne it as a work that marks a step forward or a signifi cant difference with respect to what we already have, irrespective of the commercial success it has had or will have.”
Since starting his career at Japanese watch- maker Seiko, Hasuike has gone on to work with a wide range of clients across various industry sectors since setting up his own design studio in Milan in 1968 – one of the fi rst industrial design studios of its type in the country.
Today, his output remains as prolifi c as ever, not least with his work for Hotpoint which continues to act as one of the key drivers behind the company’s brand.
