I grew up in New York city in East Harlem. My step father who was Puerto Rican loved to play jazz and blues so we had a guitar in the house. He kept it in the kitchen and would often play after dinner. At the age of eleven I started to fool around with
it. He played a lot of blues & folk songs, some Pete Seeger! I remember he played a beautiful song called Anathea by Judy Collins which I loved. He also had a
great Jazz record collection that would get played a lot. Although his choice in music didn’t really have that much influence over me, it was more the fact that there was an instrument in the house - although Blues & Folk is what you would normally play on an acoustic guitar, you
don’t really play Rock n Roll on an acoustic! But it was there and I loved holding it and the sound that it made. I thought it was truly a beautiful instrument! My Mother was a system analyst and my step-father was novelist and short story writer so I think that’s where I got the urge to write from. I had been writing poetry since I was six years old so it seemed inevitable that I would start writing my own songs, and I did! I wrote my first song when I was fourteen. Looking back my poetry is very similar to my music, and although the lyrics might be a
bit more complex these days, I think the themes
are pretty much the same. Daily life! Feeling solitary, fantasy worlds and a mixture all three.
