One of the highlights of my career was when I was asked to perform my version of ‘Story of Isaac ‘ for ‘Tower of Song: The Songs of Leonard Cohen’ along with many other great artists on the album. It is a song I have loved ever since I heard Judy Collins version of it.
It’s quite
a beautiful song yet very tragic. I feel I made it my own, although originally Lenard wanted me to take it off the album and to perform the song ‘Suzanne’ instead, which I found totally bizarre! I told him I did not want to sing ‘Suzanne’ - I did not want to sing a song with my own name on it! So I ended up doing ‘Story of Isaac ‘ instead. He later sent
me a note saying “thank you for not listening to me!”
Since being dropped by Blue Note I have decided to re-record my catalogue as I did not own the masters to the eight albums I had written, I don’t actually own any of them, I own the songs but I don’t own the actual recordings. So I have been re-recording a lot of my older material and have been releasing it on my own record label called ‘Amanuensis Productions’ Volumes 1 and 2 of the ‘Close Up’ series have already been
released and are selling
really well. Volume 3 is to be released this month and will be available from my website.
