My next album was ‘Songs In Red And Gray’ in 2001 was really a return to an older way of song writing for me.
When I was working with Mitchel I was letting him have free reign on the production, and although I loved his production it then became easy to use it as a crutch. So when I wrote the songs for ‘Songs In Red And Gray’ I returned to the acoustic guitar and became a bit more self-reliant. Most of my fans regard this album as the divorce album even though there are only 3 songs on the album that are actually about divorce, I don’t mind the generalisation.
The best of collection “Retrospective” album in 2003 is no great surprise, it is a collection of my greatest hits and came at the end of my signing with A&M Records, it was mutually agreed that it would be great to put out a Best of album, it is actually one of my favourite albums so I am glad we did it!
In 2007 I made ‘Beauty & Crime’ it was a very exciting album to make. I made it with Blue Note which was a whole new experience to me yet again. I liked working Blue Note, and really like the President of Blue Note very much. I was really sad that the relationship didn’t work for longer but unfortunately that’s the state of the industry right now. ‘Beauty & Crime’ was written about New York city after 9/11 told through different little stories and obviously strikes accord with a lot of Americans.
