All That Glitters 2011 Crystal Heart Ball

Earlier this winter, amidst the glamorous backdrop of the Field Museum’s "Gold" exhibit, more than 700 people gathered for the annual Crystal Heart Ball. Chaired by Little Company of Mary Hospital physician Travis Haldeman, D.O., and his wife, Joanne, the event featured dinner, dancing, prizes and awards. By evening's end, the event raised $426,000 for Values. Vision. Innovation: The Campaign for Little Company of Mary Hospital.

The highly successful gala, which was co-chaired by James and Marti Doherty, included the presentation of two prestigious awards. The Venerable Mary Potter Humanitarian Award was presented to Tom Taff, founder of Bucks for Burn Camp. A retired Chicago firefighter who suffered second- and third-degree burns while battling an apartment fire 17 years ago, Taff organizes fundraisers to aid Camp I Am Me, the Illinois Fire Safety alliance summer camp for young burn survivors. The camp provides children a chance to share their common experiences in

an environment that allows them to play and not feel self conscious about their scars. Taff began raising funds for the camp in 2003 and has raised more than $1 million in total.

A number of high-level Chicago Fire Department officials, including Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff and former Commissioners James Joyce and Raymond Orozco, appeared in a video to praise Taff for his efforts. “I would never be scared about running into a burning building, yet I am humbled by this award,” Taff said in thanks.

Also at the gala, the Sister Nancy Boyle Award for Excellence was presented to Salli Lizcano for her dedication to the Little Company of Mary Hospital's Auxiliary Committee. Lizcano, who is owner of Strands Salon in Oak Lawn, traces her involvement with the Auxiliary to her own experience as a patient. “Since my recovery from breast cancer 19 years ago, I have always known what a unique and compassionate place Little Company of Mary is,” Lizcano said. “I will always continue to pay it forward and let everyone know how special this hospital is.”
