“We thought: why not?” recalls Daryl. “We like modernist houses and we like the idea of it all being a stress-free deal.” So that very same night he started looking for a plot. And the couple got lucky. That weekend Daryl looked online at 10 o’clock on a Sunday. He found the plot and he bought it on the Monday. “Huf were saying it would probably take you


two years to find the plot, but we found a bun- galow that was being sold for planning permis- sion for a bigger house than we wanted so we managed to secure that pretty quickly,” Daryl says. “Then we changed the planning permis- sion to a Huf house. The process of getting the plot was very quick.” He was en route to becoming the owner of a Huf house. The German company is known for


its stylish designs and energy efficient buildings. The couple bought the plot in November


2007 yet they had to wait for about 6 months for the council in Berkshire to approve the plan- ning, plus the 6 weeks it took to buy the house and change the existing planning permission to a Huf house. Only then did Huf put them in their schedule for a self build. But there were challenges. Daryl and Sarah
