Some of the UK’s greenest homes are revealing the secrets of their eco success this month

NEW

eco homes set in a pretty Somerset village at the foot

of the Polden Hills will be opening their doors to the public on Saturday 21 May 2011, offering the chance for consumers and professionals alike to find out in close- up detail what makes a sustainable home. The award-winning development at

The Old Apple Store, Stawell, was built by developers Ecos Homes and won Best Housing Scheme at the RegenSW Green Energy Awards. The development consists of a total

of five contemporary houses, the final two of which have just come onto the market. They have been built to Code 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes putting them into the top 1 per cent of new properties in the country. With energy costs on the rise and

new financial incentives such as the Feed In Tariff and Renewable Energy Incentive being recently introduced by the Government, these homes will help to reduce the cost of living with their highly energy efficient design and renewable energy technologies. All five properties have been built to

reduce their impact on the environment and provide a healthy and cost-effective home to live in. The sun’s energy is used to heat each house and the hot water.

Sunlight is harnessed to light the houses and run energy-efficient appliances and filtered rainwater is used for washing clothes and flushing toilets. Each house is heated with an

automatic wood pellet burner and solar panels whilst electricity for lighting and fans is generated from solar photovoltaic panels known as PVs. The windows are also tripled glazed and the houses are highly insulated. The open day is being organized

by Ecos Trust, an educational charity based in the South West. The Trust was established in 2000 with the principal objective of promoting design and build techniques that give a better quality of life and reduced environmental impact. Through its subsidiary developer company Ecos Homes, the Trust is able to demonstrate real life sustainable buildings to all building professionals and the public. designer

Further information is available on the Ecostrust website. Numbers 1 and 2 at The Old Apple Store will be open to the public from 10am – 3pm on 21 May 2011. Admission is free.
