and create a harmonious overall feel within an interior, Contzen set about designing his own system, which he aptly named Colourcourage, and which would help take this complexity out of the equation.


UNIQUE COLOUR SYSTEM “With Colourcourage I defined a unique colour system that includes design patented colour ‘families’,” says Contzen. Designed for use in the areas of architecture and interior design, the system was conceived through the harmonious and sophisticated use of light and colour and is based on the common conceptions behind colour psychology combined with the current cultural understanding of colour. Consistent with Contzen’s business


model, which has seen him build up a portfolio of partners within the industry that manufacture and sell his designs, the Colourcourage collection encompasses a range of products from wallpaper, textiles and glass, to flooring, furniture and home accessories. “A Colourcourage partner network,


consisting of reputed companies in the industry, will supply appropriate products or materials, which guarantee a well-balanced and harmonious colour composition,” explains Contzen.


COLOUR COORDINATION The products produced by the partner network have all been colour coordinated in advance by Contzen himself using original samples provided by each manufacturer as colour references. This enabled the creation of a perfect symphony of coordinated colours despite the differences in their respective material surface structures and gloss factors. “I personally control every production


of a Colourcourage material or product. No production starts without a visual examination and an approval. This takes a lot of time, but I am sure that is the only way to control colour inside a production process,” says Contzen. As a result, the usual process of colour


sampling that architects and interior designers must go through becomes much shorter and in some cases is completely unnecessary. This allows interior architects and designers and their clients to concentrate on the design aspects of the room as the colour harmony of these elements is already guaranteed. The system itself consists of 24 colour


schemes that are based on the harmony between three to five colours which can be used together to create a highly aesthetic effect. “The idea is to fill architecture and ➔
