RAFAEL VINOLY ARCHITECTS

By Rafael Viñoly and Philip Jodidio (Prestel) £65 ISBN: 978-3-7913-5074-5

Uruguay-born architect Rafael Viñoly has become one of the most internationally acclaimed architects. For anyone not particularly familiar with his work, this architectural monograph gives a sense of the scale of Viñoly’s output over nearly half a century of stunning projects. The headline projects are huge in proportions but it is easy to make the assumption that

Viñoly’s skill lies only in creating immense sweeping architectural giants such as the Boston Convention Centre, Leicester’s Curve theatre or the top-heavy planned addition to the City of London landscape at 20 Fenchurch Street. Perhaps his most accomplished work is among the smaller builds where the same level

of detail and ingenuity have enhanced the lives of users of the buildings at places such as Oxford University, Brooklyn Children’s Museum in New York and a clutch of residential projects throughout the US. As a creator of bold new buildings which somehow manage to avoid antagonising

traditionalists, Viñoly is among a fairly select group of architects who are changing the world we live in for the better. The photographs, plans and drawings in the book are enhanced with Viñoly’s own personal reflection on his career to create an inspirational account of a life’s work.
