interior designs with striking but aesthetic colour tones so that the look and feel of a room, space or building is reminiscent of graphic décor or constructivist paintings that go beyond normal dimensions,” says Contzen. In this way, the room itself can become an ornament through its targeted accentuation and different colour weighting, despite the fact that materials in the room do not have a graphic surface. For Contzen, this system makes it possible to reduce graphic design down to ‘pure’ colour and he sees this as a logical reaction to a decade of décor and ornamentalism.
CULTURAL SHIFT And it is in this past decade that Contzen believes we have witnessed the biggest cultural shifts ever experienced. “I started my graphic work for interior design products 12 years ago with the perception that people will be influenced by cultural and ‘subcultural’ currents.
“In my opinion, we experienced one of the biggest cultural alternations ever in the last decade. We changed from an analogue culture to a digital culture,” says Contzen. He explains that the new habits we have
gained from living with and communicating with computers have created a colourful new style pluralism, which has in turn influenced the way we choose to decorate our interiors. However, Contzen’s reduction of graphic design down to pure colour should by no means be interpreted in a way that sees pattern losing its importance in interior
design. “For our Colourcourage project, I choose to concentrate only on colour in order to show the importance of colour for room conceptions and to give interior designers and consumers a matching range of aesthetic and brilliant colours.
NEW PATTERNED COLLECTION “A brand new patterned collection for nearly all the product segments I design in cooperation with my industry partners will be released in summer this year. This collection will be able to be used in conjunction with our Colourcourage plain colour range,” says Contzen.
But the story doesn’t end there. As long as he has fun in what he doing, Contzen says that things will always progress. He is already developing innovative new product ranges in partnership with various industry experts.
“At the moment we are working with the world leading company of caoutchouc flooring to develop three progressive products that will be released this year. We would also like to complete our spectrum with serial lighting. For that reason we have integrated the designer Joerg Obenauer into the Contzentrade design studio as a specialist in the area of lighting products and lighting installations.” And the hunt for new industry partners
continues as Contzen pursues his desire to design tiles. There is no doubting that these new ventures will be just as colourful as those we have already seen from Contzen. designer
