Oberoi is the favoured employer of a new spa academy near New Delhi, which has made recruitment slightly easier

– like wires hanging out of walls that I’m con- stantly having to get fi xed,” she says. However, compared with some of the


attitudes from employees in previous spa director roles, she insists working in India is a breeze. “T e therapists really feel blessed to have a job, so they try very hard at what they do,” says Hays. T ough she has relatively few issues with


her staff , fi nding good employees in the fi rst place is a challenge. Changes to the visa sys- tem brought in by the Indian government in September 2010, means that she can no longer recruit therapists from T ailand and Indonesia, unless she can prove they have skills she’s unable to fi nd within India. And therein lies the problem. “T e population in India is huge and there are many people unemployed, yet the spa industry is so new here that people don’t recognise it as a legiti- mate career.” She says. “From an operational point of view, this causes a problem.” In the last six months, staffi ng has become


easier since the opening of an academy in Noida, near New Delhi. The Lambency Chrysalis Academy has an intake of 200 stu- dents per year and runs six-month training
