guitar, which to be honest really did change my life, a new computer, a car to tour in and a PA, and he encouraged me to make Reckless Angels. I now work about 60 hours a week in the office chasing gigs, organising players, promoting the business and writing new songs, and a whole shed load of time out on the road playing gigs and touring. This life style, while hard work and, at times very stressful and demanding, is also absolutely what I want to be doing. What I need to be doing.

I have a new album in the pipeline, to be released in 2012, and I am tremendously excited about it. Through a lot of hard work, and a wee bit of luck, folk are hearing my music and they seem to be enjoying it. I work with a bunch of people who are collectively called The Reckless Angels – there are seven of them in the pool and generally we tour and gig as a trio. I enjoy playing with the different line ups and variations that a pool of seven people allows, it keeps the music fresh as folk interpret the songs differently. Audiences have said they enjoy this aspect of my music and it keeps them coming back to gigs regularly.

I am very fortunate to be playing with some truly awesome musicians: Amy Geddes, Andy Thorburn, Vera van Heeringen, Jed Milroy, Jenni Hopwood, Laura Beth Salter, and Joel Sanderson. We are all over the country in the year ahead. We would be delighted to find you at one of our gigs and if you are there then please do come and say hello.

I worried initially about using this angle to talk about myself and my music. I guess I don’t want readers to think I am being negative, or feeling sorry for myself – actually the very opposite is true. Of course this is a simplified version of events and I completely acknowledge that chronic pain, in any form, is a very depressing and debilitating problem for everyone who suffers its different aspects. So, yes, my arm is a pain in the... arm, and it still hurts and it gives me a fair amount of trouble but, crucially, it no longer depresses me as I’m happy with my lot. I think I have got a very good deal from life.
