the game. I made this album as a way back into music, initially, not even thinking of it as an album. I had no idea it would be as successful as it has been or that it would lead me to working full time as a musician and songwriter.


I would hesitate to call myself a musician: I am a wordsmith, I am fascinated by the different ways language is used, and I love to play with words. To me a song is a story in miniature. If I can tell a tale using only a few words and people understand it then I have done my job. I have always been this way: from a very early age I would stay up late, under the covers in my bed with a torch, inventing stories, or even just copying out the words on the page from a storybook. The reasons that I would not class myself as a proper musician are: that I am self taught, I have no formal training, I cannot read music, I am dyslexic and I struggle hugely to understand the relationship between chords. As a result of my limitations in my left arm and wrist I use the capo to create different keys, while playing the shapes I can manage. I didn’t really understand, until early in 2011, what this actually meant for the musicians who come to play with me and find they are playing in all the keys, across the board, sometimes with chords that don’t fit into the regular way of grouping them together. Somehow the chords work, even when they are not supposed to. It seems, unwittingly, I am occasionally writing unusual music! Purely by accident rather than design, I hasten to add.


So, music it seems is something I have to do... I do not have a choice. I have wonderful support from my husband Jasper, who realised, probably much more quickly than I, that I just had to find a way to make it work. He encouraged me to spend money on a half sized Tanglewood
