Friday, June 4 – Afternoon Session


Bishop Schnase opened the Business Session at 3:47 p.m. with a reading from John 15. Kevin Buckrucker led the opening prayer.


Steve Breon, Board of Ordained Ministry Chair, presented the board report, and highlighted evaluation of the ordination process last October. He introduced 17 persons for commissioning, 19 for ordination and one associate member for recognition.


Bishop Schnase’s message was on the conference theme, “Growing Deeper: Deepening the Spiritual Life for Leadership in the Church.” He liſted up the Center for Congregational Excellence and the Center for Pastoral Excellence as resources to strengthen churches. His challenge, “If everyone offered the same quality of invitation as you, would we be growing or declining? Same thing with our spiritual life, if everyone lived the same way you did, would your church be growing or suffering from atrophy?”


Bob Farr, Congregational Excellence Director, reported on the Healthy Church Initiative, Small Church Initiative, Pastoral Leader Development and Lay Leader Development.

Bishop Schnase opened the Business Session by reading from Te Gospel of Luke at 9:07 a.m. Terri Swan opened with prayer.


Brian Hammons, Conference Lay Leader, gave the Laity Address, “Focus In, Focus Out,” based on Romans 12:2. Kevin Buckrucker will lead the LLD efffort. Shannon Meister is developing Young Adult leaders. Rick Matson is Lay Speaking Director. Te conference was encouraged to browse the website moumethodist.org, laity tab.


Mark Rundel, Board of Trustees Chair, presented the Policy and Procedures Report on page C15, which advises all churches to use UMPACT insurance since the board will continue the relationship.


Mark Rundel introduced Ivan James who gave the Closed Churches Report: Scruggs Memorial (2010), Shaw Avenue (2010), Harper’s Chapel (Montgomery City, 2010), Swope Park (2010), White Avenue (2010), St. Paul’s (Sweet Springs, 2009), North Spring (2010), Cornerstone (Lake Ozark, 2009), Bear Ticket (2010), Oakland (Springfield, 2009), Ravanna (2010), Old Salem (2010), Union Chapel (Jasper, 2010). Mark Rundel said the conference should mourn and celebrate these churches.
