SAUNA LUXURY

THIS & BELOW: Tylö infrared cabins available from Golden Coast

WHY INFRARED SAUNAS? A key attribute of FAR infrared technology when it comes to saunas is its ability to heat an object directly without raising the temperature of the air surrounding the object. This is called direct light conversion. Penetrating as deeply as three inches into our bodies, FAR infrared rays improve blood circulation, stimulate endorphins, destroy certain bacteria and parasites, lower lactic acid, and burn calories. Sometimes called radiant heat saunas, soft heat saunas or heat therapy rooms, infrared saunas offer most of the same benefits that traditional Finnish saunas do, but they do so at lower, more tolerable temperatures. While the air temperature in a typical Finnish sauna bath ranges from 170 to 200°F (77 to 93°C), such temperatures aren’t required in a FAR infrared sauna to induce optimal bather perspiration. By penetrating the bather’s body and effecting a deep, satisfying heat of just 100 to 130°F (38 to 55°C), the FAR infrared rays can create an enjoyably cleansing, detoxifying and revitalising experience. In fact, many sources claim that the volume of sweat produced during a FAR infrared sauna bath can be as much as three times greater than in a Finnish sauna bath resulting in a faster, more thorough and more beneficial flushing of toxic chemicals and harmful heavy metals from the body.

Today there are a wide variety of sauna options. Heat sources include wood, electricity, gas and other more unconventional methods such as solar power. There are wet saunas, dry saunas, smoke saunas, steam saunas, and those that work with infrared waves. There are two main types of stoves: continuous heating and the heat storage-type. Continuously heating stoves have a small heat capacity and can be heated up on a

fast on-demand basis, whereas a heat storage stove has a large heat (stone) capacity and can take much longer to heat. Enjoying a sauna is not just limited to family members as more and more people are opening their home saunas to friends. A perfect way to end an evening around the pool or just relaxing with friends. The health benefits are multiple too. Not only does the enveloping warmth improve your complexion, drawing out

impurities and boosting your circulation but the body releases endorphins which help to create an all round positive lift to the spirit. Let’s face it, we could all do with a positive lift of spirit every now and then! Your immune system can also benefit

from a daily embrace of the heat from a sauna. Colds and flu seemed to be prevalent over the winter months and the warmth provided opens pores and helps the body to adapt to changes in
