POOL INSURANCE

FREE INSURANCE SCHEME offers pool comfort

T

wo of the main worries when you employ any type of builder is whether they are capable of doing the work to a high enough standard and if there is any financial protection if something goes wrong. If you are having a swimming pool or spa built, you should choose a SPATA, Swimming Pool and Allied Trade Association, member because these member companies work to industry standards, including a Code of Ethics and have the back up of SpataShield, an insurance scheme intended to give peace of mind to ensure a pool is completed to industry standards.

In the unlikely event that a member cannot complete the pool, the insurance scheme in place, subject to the relevant terms and conditions, will complete the pool, or deal with any valid warranty issues. SpataShield cover is currently FREE to customers and non SPATA members cannot provide this kind of extra reassurance to their clients. The SpataShield logo can only be used by SpataShield members and they should provide their domestic customers with a specially prepared “Relax” leaflet when carrying out any quotation work. If the contract falls within the scope of the cover provided through SpataShield, then customers should also be provided with a copy of the SpataShield Bond Certificate.

If the quotation is accepted, then the customer MUST be given a copy of a signed Bond Certificate when the contract is made and at practical completion a Warranty Certificate MUST also be provided to the client. In the event of a claim from a client, it will only be valid if there is a relevant Bond and / or

Warranty Certificate that has been signed and dated correctly and the claim is submitted in time to ECIC. The maximum Contract Value Limit available under SpataShield is £150,000 (inc VAT), but note some members may have cover for less than the full amount quoted above, so please check with them. Depending on the member’s Contract Value, the maximum claim will be up to £30,000, while the Warranty limit is up to £20,000. Currently, only new domestic pools fall within the scope of SpataShield and not commercial contracts, or refurbishments. Pool covers supplied as part of the installation contract are also included but enclosures are not.

SpataShield is an insurance scheme provided by the Electrical Contractors’ Insurance Company Ltd (ECIC).

For further information about this scheme, please contact them at their administrative office.

FIFTY YEARS RAISING STANDARDS FOR THE POOL INDUSTRY It is always a momentous occasion when a person or organisation reaches 50 years old and in the case of SPATA, the Swimming

Pool and Allied Trades Association, the milestone is an acknowledgement of the hard work undertaken by its members to raise standards in the pool industry. SPATA evolved into its present format when the original Association of Swimming Pool Contractors (ASPC) merged with other allied trades in 1972. The ASPC had begun following an historic meeting at the Farmers’ Club in London on 21 April 1961 and six companies made a small but significant contribution to the future of the UK pool industry by deciding to set up the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors.

By 1967, membership had reached 16 full members and 26 associates, and in this same year, the work on developing the first set of standards for concrete pools was carried out. These Standards have continually been revised and updated ever since and now also incorporate standards on other pool types (such as liner pools) and the latest (6th) edition of the Standards came into effect in July 2010. The first SPATA awards for the leading pools in the industry were held in Brighton on 13 February 1978. This first competition was judged on black and white photos of entries by a judging panel which included Niki Lauda F1 racing driver and David Wilkie the Olympic swimmer. SPATA continues as a trade association for its members, based in Andover, Hampshire and with approximately 200 members, it supports some of the best pool builders, consultants, designers and suppliers in the UK – a number of which can be seen on pages 28 – 39 of this magazine.
