When you are buying new equipment – with a fresh clean slate, how do you make up your mind what to buy from the large variety of slot machines on the market? You warned me that this would be a difficult one and
you are right. We’ve been approached by everyone out there, as you can imagine! Our first focus has to be on customer satisfaction.
We can only have slot machines and table games that the typical patron will enjoy. If we bring in a slot machine that is themed in a way that is offensive or of no interest, then no one will make use of it. We’ve found that a lot of the slot machines that are popular in Las Vegas casinos should play well in Panama. So I guess what we look for is dictated by the patron.
Of the casinos you have visited, do you have any favourites, and why? I’ve been to Las Vegas and, not wanting to sound
arrogant, I wasn’t impressed. A lot of the newer casinos are like carnival rides, which on principal I didn’t like. I understand that the Powers that Be in Las Vegas are trying to make it kid-friendly, but it was a little heavy on the roller coasters and the fiber- glass dragons. I found that I really enjoyed Paris Las Vegas, which was less “cutie-cutie.” I think my biggest issue with Vegas was that I
expected a higher degree of customer service than I saw – it seemed that a lot of the people working there were just plain unhappy. Of course, given the way the economy has suffered there, it’s hardly surprising. I’m a resident of Washington State, and I like a lot
of the casinos here. Some like the Muckleshoot and the Tualalip, both Indian casinos, have great service in addition to exciting amenities and fun gaming. But I also like some of the smaller boutique casinos closer to Seattle, such as Hollywood, which offers a personalized experience if you’re a regular. I haven’t yet been to any of the new casinos in
Asia, notably in Singapore or Macau, but I’m excited to go.
What is the best piece of business advice you have ever been given? Take care of your customers and they will take care
of you. And related to that – watch your pennies; in doing so, the dollars will take care of themselves.
Finally, do you have any ambitions – outside work, perhaps a hobby or a desire to travel? Ambitions outside work… I don’t think I understand
that question. Not, really. I’ve travelled extensively throughout
Asia but I’ve never been to Europe, so that’s a goal. And sail. When I was a kid, I did a lot of sailing, and I miss it. So I’d love to take off six months or a year and just sail. I don’t even care where I go, just so long as I’m on deep water.
