TRAVEL AND THE PATIENT WITH DIABETES

Traveling for a patient with diabetes requires extra planning and preparation. Here are some tips:

1 Visit your doctor at least 4-6 weeks prior to leaving for a check-up. If any changes in medication are necessary, start these long before departure.

2 Pack extra food in your carry-on luggage. Simple carbohydrates like glucose tablets/ gels are best in case hypoglycemia occurs, while complex carbohydrates like trail mix and granola bars can tide one over in case of missed or delayed fl ights.

3 Patients with diabetes are advised to have on hand a list of their current medications, devices and allergies. Ensure that you have extra supplies to last you throughout your trip.

4 Always have current medical identifi cation with you. It should contain your name, medical condition, emergency phone number and medical insurance information.

5 Blood sugar monitoring should be performed more frequently when there are changes in activity level and medication dosing.

6 Temperature changes may affect both medications and glucose meters and strips. In warmer climate, keep insulin refrigerated and examine for any changes in appearance prior to use.

7 Learn how to say “I need a doctor” or “I have diabetes” in the local language.

n March 25, 1970 Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd. was born from CEO Barry Lapointe’s entrepre- neurial spirit and love of aviation. By 1974, in partnership with Jim Rogers, Kelowna Flightcraft Air Charter had taken fl ight. Forty years later Kelowna Flightcraft has become the largest private employer in the Okanagan with nearly 600 employees at YLW and 1000 employees across Canada.

Diversifi cation is what makes Kelowna Flightcraft a success and a great service provider at YLW. The company offers its clients a true one-stop shop. Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd can fl y, maintain, modify, engineer, and paint aircraft and train both air crew and maintenance personnel. Maintenance and modifi cation services include mechanical, structures, avionics and engines. Airlines such as Northwest, Icelandair and Thompsonfl y bring aircraft to YLW to be serviced by Kelowna Flightcraft, which has the established itself as the world leader in winglet installations on a B757, completing the modifi cation faster than any other maintenance repair facility in North America. In recent years Flightcraft has added an Engine Repair Shop, Landing Gear Overhaul shop, Plating Shop and expanded their Component & Machine Shops and hangar facilities.

As part of its diversifi cation, Kelowna Flightcraft Ltd has become the exclusive air cargo carrier for Purolator Courier with it’s fl eet of CV580 and B727 aircraft, and a dedicated cargo carrier for Canada Post with it’s DC10 fl eet.

Finally, in 2005 Kelowna Flightcraft was awarded a major contract to provide state of the art training services and facilities to train Canada’s Air Force pilots while creating 200+ new jobs and putting the company on the map for military training. Known as Canada Wings Aviation Training Centre, they provide 39 aircraft (fi xed wing and helicopters) and 2 full fl ight simulators.

Another highlight in the Did You Know tidbits: if you add all of their fl eets of aircraft, Kelowna Flightcraft has over 70 aircraft, and is Canada’s largest dedicated cargo airline.

Recognizing an opportunity when the aviation industry experienced a shortage in Aircraft Structural Repair Technicians in 1999 Kelowna Flightcraft began offering in-house training. Lapointe realized that a more viable solution to this growing issue was to have British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) students onsite. In 1999/2000 partnering with BCIT, School District 23 and YLW, Kelowna Flightcraft coordinated a program for Grade 12 students to graduate with their BCIT diploma in Aircraft Structural Repairs. The program continues today, located right in the West hanger at Flightcraft in YLW.

Congratulations Barry Lapointe and your Kelowna Flightcraft team on 40 years of making an impact in the world of aviation. We are proud to have you a part of the YLW community!
