Where Rural T

he Westside is a great place to be. Those who live there know it, as do the many visitors who come

back each year. It’s a lifestyle destination that is recognized for its pleasant mix of rural charm and urban sophistication.

Locals commonly refer to the communities of West Kelowna, Westbank and Peach- land as ‘the Westside’ as they convene on the west shores of the ever picturesque Lake Okanagan. The remarkable scenery, abundance of nature and wineries, coupled with all of the amenities one would expect from a charming wine region, make this an ideal place to visit.

Wine touring and outdoor activities are popular past times and as one discovers the local history, it is interesting to discover how intertwined they become. Mission Hill Family Estate winery and Mt. Boucherie are two of the most prominent landmarks in the community and they have a past that binds them together.

Today, Mt. Boucherie is enjoyed by hikers and nature enthusiasts. It offers moderate to challenging climbs with breathtaking views that stretch from Kelowna to Peach- land. Many different types of fl ora and fauna as well as distinct geological rock formations can be found on the mountain.

What many people do not realize is that Mt. Boucherie is the remnant of an extinct volcano that erupted over 50 million years ago and it is this history that has laid the foundation for a blossoming wine industry. Some of the best wine in the Okanagan comes from the grapes that are grown at the base of Mt. Boucherie, as soil conditions have been shown to affect wine chemistry, quality, fl avours and aromas. The unique composition of the soil in this area refl ects the complex underlying geology of the land.

Beaumont, Rollingdale, Mt.Boucherie, Little Straw, Volcanic Hills, Kalala and Quails’ Gate wineries all benefi t from this unique soil composition and produce award
