L
ove is in the air – and the airport. These days couples often choose to tie the knot in various locations other than churches, such as hotels, parks, and wineries; but how often are weddings held at airports? In her column Will you marry me at the airport? (June 27, 2008
USAToday.com) Harriet Baskas, writer for
MSNBC.com and author of “Stuck at the Airport”, points out that weddings at airports are probably more common than one would think, with some European airports even offering Wedding packages. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has employed a wedding planner who keeps busy helping to arrange up to 50 weddings a year and offers packages such as “Say Yes and Go” or “Ticket to Paradise”.
Weddings at YLW are not that common; however just before Christmas, Airport Communications Coordinator Jenelle Hynes received two calls on the same day enquiring about the possibility of holding weddings at the airport. Nothing further came from one of the calls, but on January 9, 2010 Kelowna residents Bobby Saunders and Wade Stolz exchanged their “I dos” in front of approximately 25 family and friends before they and their family jumped on a fl ight to Cancun. “We wanted to get married in Mexico but found it was easier if we were legally married fi rst in Canada then had our
fantasy ceremony on the beach,” says the new bride. “Unfortunately we couldn’t decide on a spot for the ceremony and time was running out, so I thought how about the airport as it would be close to our beach wedding in the Mayan and it would make for a great story. I made the call to the airport and was surprised how accommodating & enthusiastic they were.”
The 6:30 a.m. ceremony was casual but heartfelt and touching. The couple did not want the offi cial ceremony to detract from the experience for the family and friends who were fl ying out for the beach cer- emony so they decided not to exchange rings or kisses, but sealed their union by signing the marriage license and feeding each other a Timbit from YLW’s own Tim Hortons
After the ceremony Bobby and Wade with their family and friends boarded the
WestJet fl ight to Cancun with Bobby’s gown still under wraps.
Congratulations and best wishes to the happy couple!
