Cherry Tomatoes Handling
As part of a continuous efficiency improvement programme, Thanet Earth consulted UPM Conveyors to automate the transfer of cherry tomatoes from an Ilapak Vegatronic 500 bagger to the check weigher/labelling/packing area at a rate of 70 packs per minute. UPM Conveyors evaluated various options and decided the ideal solution to transfer packs from the 100mm high discharge height from the bagger was via a horizontal feed section to elevate to a height of 1100mm through a 90 degree radius to the check weigher in one belt conveyor utilising High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE) construction which is

Payne Tear Tape
A major promotion by Donskoy Tabak is using Payne’s Supastrip VDP tear tape to drive its online communication to smokers of its Kiss cigarettes, one of the leading brands on the Russian market. Already the number one independent tobacco manufacturer in Russia, Donskoy is hoping to capitalise on this position and attract the country’s growing number of female smokers with the campaign for its Kiss Superslims brand. The Supastrip VDP tear tape from Payne is used across the seven variants of Kiss Super Slims cigarettes, highlighting the medium’s flexibility in showcasing a promotion across different packaging formats. “This type of communication is increasingly popular and effective with consumers,” comments Svetlana Dobrydneva the Marketing Director of
Donskoy Tabak. “The use of new media enhances consumer loyalty by increasing their involvement with the Kiss brand and provides us with the means to have a two-way communication with consumers. Payne’s tear tape complements the campaign perfectly by making the experience interactive at the point of opening the pack,” Svetlana Dobrydneva adds. For more information call 0115 9759069, email

Labellers give PepsiCo palletising
flexibility Logopak has supplied PepsiCo's Little Island plant in Cork, Ireland, with two specialist labelling machines to identify pallets of soft drink concentrate as they are loaded by robot. This provides production flexibility by allowing the pallets from different production lines and with different products to be directed to different shrink-wrapping and transit labelling lines and caters also for downtime during maintenance or repair. The two Logopak 804T machines operate within the safety cage of the robot palletisers and attach pre-printed bar code labels to the base of the pallets, using a purpose-built applicator that folds the label round the two outer faces of a corner block. To guarantee adhesion on the rough timber, Logopak also designed the labelling material specifically for the purpose, using a combination of aluminium and paper for extra strength, together with a particularly high grab adhesive. A GEM OF A BOTTLE
FROM STO STO Flaconnage have produced and decorated a round, 4ml gift bottle for Oriflame’s range of Gem Eau de Parfums: Petal Quartz, Diamond Musk and Amethyst Fatale Eau de Parfums. ‘This was an interesting project,’ said Mark Devonald Smith, STO Sales Director for Perfumery and Personal Care. ‘It’s a natural miniature to the 50ml regular bottle, which
is shallow but with a large diameter, balanced by a matching cylindrical cap which fastens onto the neck. The registrations of bottle and cap are critical to obtain a successful closure. Also, the bottle is one pass ceramic printed with a pattern of black flower heads plus the name of the fragrance. The flowers make a complete circle round the bottle and, again, registration is critical.’ For more information call 01977 607 124, email
