Balancing Childhood Energies HEALING ARTS By Li Hua, L. Ac. TCMD.
Behavior training starts in childhood. If the child does not get the proper type of training, his/her behavior may be not normal in adulthood. Babies have their own characters, personalities and habits. These behaviors are influenced by their parents and relatives as well as the condition of the baby’s health.
The balanced child learns more easily and gets along well with others. On the other hand, children who are not balanced physically may not get along with their par- ents, friends, teachers, and their community. They may become isolated or make others uncomfortable as well.
During late winter and early spring, depression is at its height. Adults may notice their moods changing and feel the emotional stress. They will often consult their doc- tors and health care providers for treatment, but since children are not always able to express their needs, their depression is often overlooked. Teenagers are especially vulnerable to depression. They often act out as a plea for help in order to get the parent’s attention. Not only are the parents feeling the stress and pressure of raising teenagers, but the teenagers are feeling it as well.
Dong Dong, a Chinese-American teenage boy stayed up late and had low energy in the morning. He missed his school frequently and was apathetic. His attitude toward his parents was surly and he didn’t show respect toward anyone. His parents took him to various doctors without success. When I treated him, I found out that he

stayed up late due to his liver being out of balance, his stomach Yin was low, and his spleen was full of wetness. His bowel movements were irregular and he often had a headache. He thought I was psychic since I knew his secret problems. He recognized that I could help him so he became more cooperative with my treatment. He felt relaxed and fell into a deep sleep on the table. He asked his parents to buy the treatment table because he slept so well. I told him It was not the table, it was the acupuncture opening the energy channels, balanc- ing his chi and comforting him during the treatment. We all laughed. After a few acupuncture treatments, his parents said their son became more polite and started to do some house work and also became involved some school activities. He has not missed a day of school since having acupuncture treatments. His entire attitude changed. Dong Dong told me he wanted to go to college and to be a financial specialist.
Ashley is a one and half year old beautiful little girl. Her mother was my regular patient. One day, her mother was here for acupuncture to increase her energy. During the conversation, I found out one of the reasons she was so tired was because she had to chase Ashley to fed her. In addition, Ashley woke her up with her crying almost every night. I suggested that she bring Ashley in for acupuncture.
When Ashley came into my office, it lost its former peace and quiet. Ashley jumped and ran everywhere and couldn’t be still for a second. Her mom told me this was normal. I couldn’t imagine how her mother could live in such conditions every day! After checking, I found out Ashley was cutting teeth which interrupted her sleep. She also had digestive problems. After two sessions of need- less acupuncture, Ashley’s mother told me her daughter was much better. Ashley reduced her crying at night, and appetite had improved as well. The third time I decided to use needles. I did acupuncture for Ashley success- fully. In the following check up, Ashley’s mother had no complaints about her daughter. Ashley was sleeping and eating well, she could now sit down to look at her picture books and play with her toys. Three acupuncture treat- ments had cleared away a mother’s “night mare”.
Mind, body and spirit are all connected. Balancing children’s and babies’ mental and physical health lowers the risk of imbalance and abnormal behavior in adult- hood. Acupuncture may be one of the best investments parents make in a life time!
