Appliances, knows what it means to face tough cir- cumstances as a child. “I grew up on the South side

of Pittsburgh – it was a tough neighborhood. By Saturday, there was no food in the house.” Through hard work and de- termination, Glenn moved up in the world, eventually buying Coogan Gildersleeve from the founding partners. “I’ve been very fortunate, and I want to give back,” he said. With that spirit in mind, Coogan Gildersleeve hosted a fundraiser on January 15th to support the Mystic Area Shelter & Hospitality (MASH) and its efforts to help families who are homeless or at risk of losing their housing. In 2009, conscious of the difficult times many local families are facing during the recession, Glenn and his staff, including daughter, Coogan Gildersleeve VP Kate French, and Sales Director Lucy Navarro, decided to do something to help. “We wanted to stay local – to help an organization that is focused on our community,” said Kate. So Coogan Gildersleeve decided to support Mystic-based MASH. The first event in January 2010 was a great success, so the Coogan Gildersleeve crew decided to do it again in 2011.“We were thrilled when Lucy offered to put on this event again this year!” said Lisa Tepper Bates, Executive Director, MASH. The event provided a great opportunity for MASH to reach members of the community who might not know about the organization’s work or the scope of local need. MASH provided shelter for 26 local homeless families last year and provided assistance to 34 families at risk of homelessness by helping them remain housed rather than facing eviction or the emergency shelter system. Coogan Gildersleeve invited guests to a free, delicious

brunch of kielbasa, scrambled eggs, breakfast burritos and pancakes and to bid on silent auction items generously donated by other local businesses.

In July, 2010, Scott Champagne took over the reins as manager of the very active ShopRite in the New London Mall. Previously affi liated with a regional grocery chain, Scott likes the environment of the local, independently owned ShopRite. “It’s great to be able to communicate directly with the owners and managers of ShopRite, the Capano Family. They’re always here for me and we work together to deliver the very best to our customers.”

(l-r) Mystic businessmen, Mark Densmore, owner, Densmore Oil, and Terry Smith, service manager, Densmore Oil, came out to the breakfast to support Glenn Dean, owner, Coogan Gildersleeve Appliances, and his MASH fundraiser.

Coogan Gildersleeve asked members of the community to bring donation items that MASH can use in re-housing homeless families. “We had a wonderful response to the request for donations. We will be able to help a lot of families to furnish apartments with the necessities,” Lisa said. In addi- tion to the valuable in-kind donations, the event raised nearly $4,500 in silent auction proceeds and cash donations. Lucy noted that her two daughters, as well as, Glenn, his

daughter, Kate, and Kate’s two children (Glenn’s grandkids), Cheyenne and Cody Holliday, organized and worked at the event together. “This is really about families helping families in a time of need,” said Lucy.

“Glenn, Lucy and Kate are terrific examples of business leaders going out of their way to help neighbors,” Lisa said. “We are so grateful for Coogan Gildersleeve’s support for MASH’s work to help families with children facing home- lessness in our community.” To post your comments, visit: www.theresident.com

In addition to his regular store duties, Scott participates in many of the philanthropic endeavors ShopRite conducts. Before Thanksgiving, the store helped with the food drive conducted by the New London Police Department. Four times a year, employees at the store, including Scott, write letters to military personnel and put them in care packages of food assembled by the store and delivered to the Subase in Groton for distribution. Born in Rhode Island, Scott lives in Stonington with his wife and three young children. The next time you’re in the New London ShopRite, stop by and say hello to Scott.
