Stopping Nuisance Barking D
by Sam Mazzotta
ear Paws4Pets: What is the best way to get my 6-month-old dog, “Kit,” to quit nuisance barking, and does Bark Off
really work? - Phillip M., via email DEAR PHILLIP: The best way to address
nuisance barking is through daily, attentive training methods. Whether you spring for an ultrasonic “anti- barking” device or something else, the key to reducing or stopping Kit’s barking is spending time with him, teaching him not to bark incessantly.
The most common training method to stop unwanted barking is to distract the dog with a noise, a hiss or a sharp “no!” Or, in the case of the device mentioned, an “ultrasonic” noise that does the same thing. No matter how much money you spend or don’t spend, that’s really the key technique.
But there’s more to it. When I say “distract,” that doesn’t mean just hissing, shaking a can of pennies or pressing an

residentAntiques Train Set
I have a Lionel Electronic Train set 4110WS. It was made in 1948, and I am wondering what it might be worth. Although the original boxes are fairly beat up, the set is intact and everything works.
- Jim, Rochester, NY One of the better references is the Standard Catalogue of
Lionel Train Sets 1945-1969 by David Doyle (Krause, $29.99). According to Doyle, in mint condition, your set is valued at $3,700, and in excellent, $2,000. To a collector, it might be worth even more. Condition and scarcity are two factors that are extremely important when it comes to any collectible, whether it is a train sets or a fi rst-edition book.
I have an antique Victorian tiger maple frame with glass, and I would like to know its current value. I paid $75 for it years ago when I lived in Kansas City.
- Marie, Sun City West, AZ You should show your frame to some of the antique dealers in
nearby Glendale, AZ, to see what they think it might be worth. Tiger maple frames vary in value depending on design and condition.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week continues to encourage the form- ing of new personal
relationships and the shoring up of those that might be weakening. New contacts also dominate the workaday world.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While the bold Bovine might want to move quickly to deal with sudden plan changes, it might be best to wait until you can come up with some solid facts behind the unexpected turn of events.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good week to consider how you’ll move on matters both personal and professional. In either case, the more you know about them, the more likely it is that you’ll make the right decisions.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although you might find more col- leagues ready to support your plans, some of them could ask for changes you don’t approve of. Be ready to defend your position if necessary.
ultrasonic control button from your cozy spot on the couch. I mean, distract immediately, then get up and go to Kit and have him sit and stay for a minute. When he does that, give him lots of praise. Then -- and this may sound revolutionary -- spend more time with him, training or playing. Just pressing a button and ignoring your dog won’t solve the problem. The button you should press when Kit’s barking is the pause button on your DVR.
Kit, at 6 months, is going through a bit of a change, heading into puppy puberty. He’s energetic and pushing the envelope. So be fi rm and consistent with his obedience training, play with him to work off that energy, and set a daily schedule for
him -- feeding, walks, training, play, sleep -- and stick to it. It will take a few weeks to reduce his barking this way, but it’s worth it.

Peppermint English Setter • Adult • Male
Peppermint (“Peppi”) is an approximately 1-2 year old neutered male, judging from his level of activity and puppy-like awkwardness. He is a very sweet boy and responds well to his name so should be an excellent candidate for someone who wants to continue his training. He is very outgoing with both peo- ple and dogs. He is defi nitely not a dominant male so he would get along great in a home with another dog. He is the perfect example of “setter personality.” We would love an active family with regular access to a secure fenced area where he can really stretch his long legs, preferably with a canine companion or two. Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue is not a shelter, but a group of
volunteers who are committed to fi nding excellent homes for the dogs in our program. Call 210.865.6492 or email

by Tony Rizzo Jennifer Aniston
HOLLYWOOD... JoEllen of Hoschton, GA, wrote to ask, “What is the cast of ‘Friends’ up to at work and in their personal lives? “Friends” ran on NBC from 1994-2004, and before the sitcom ended after 236 episodes, each of its six stars was making $1 million a show. Jennifer Aniston (who played Rachel Green) became a bona fi de movie star. Among her hits were “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “The Break-Up” (2006), “Marley and Me” (2008) and “The Bounty Hunter” (2010). Next up is “Just Go With It” with Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman, due out in February; followed by “Horrible Bosses” with Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx and Jason Bateman; and “Wanderlust” with Paul Rudd. She’s been linked romantically to Vince Vaughn, Gerard Butler and John Mayer, but hasn’t remarried since her divorce to Brad Pitt in 2005.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) You might want to review a decision to work alone on a project. You might see it as efficient and prudent, but some might see it as unnecessary secretiveness, even for a Scorpio.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Don’t be put off by a lukewarm
response to a recent effort. Perhaps you didn’t present a strong enough argument. Rebuild your case with more facts, and try again. Good luck.
