n celebration of Black History Month, the play, Harriet Tubman’s

Dream will be performed on February 5, 7:00pm, at The Writer’s Block, Ink, New London. Harriet Tubman was an African American, abolitionist, anti-slavery activist, suffragist and one of the greatest American humanitarians that ever lived.

After escaping slavery, into which Harriet was born, she made 13 missions to personally rescue over seventy slaves with the help of the Underground Railroad and helped another 60 slaves plan and carryout their own escapes.

Throughout her life, she

worked tirelessly and selfl essly to end injustice and to obtain freedom, equality and dignity for all people. To help support herself and the fugitive slave community and to fi nance her rescue missions, Harriet Tubman worked as a cook, domestic servant and gave dra- matic storytelling performances of her life. At parlor socials or at church meetings, she performed to great acclaim for many prominent abolitionists, suffragists and the literary elite in New England. In Harriet Tubman’s Dream, Camilla Ross portrays Harriet giving one of her storytelling performances in Boston. Camilla is the current president and founder

The Dad I Wish I Had T

he dream doesn’t have to end with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We all can be heroes in our circle of infl uence. Yet, there is an increasing problem in

the African-American community today with too many fathers being “out of the picture” when it comes to being a part of their children’s lives.

This problem may be blurring the vision of Dr. King and of so many others who paved the way. Former NFL Player Freddie Scott, II, author of the

book, The Dad I Wish I Had, is focused on encouraging fathers in the African-American community. He wants fathers to know that they have great infl uence and that they can pass down a legacy of hope to their children just as Dr. King passed on hope to the world.

Scott speaks from his personal experience of growing up without having his father in his life as he would have liked.

Scott has a history as a player in the National Football League. He is a minister at Word of Faith Christian Center, Nashville, youth counselor, public speaker and author. He is founder and president of Unlock The Champion, LLC., an organization dedicated to people raised in broken homes, especially athletes. His most recent research has made him aware of the tremendous need, now more than ever, for strong fathers in America’s ever-changing culture and across the world. Today, Scott travels throughout America speaking on such issues as family, character development, and personal goals. To date, Freddie has spoken to thousands helping to empower people to not be imprisoned to the pain of their past. He is an NFL Spokesman for All Pro Dad,

an Ambassador for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle TN and the Dean of Word of Faith church’s Spiritual Growth Institute.

Scott is most proud of being a loving husband to his wife of 10 years, Tondalanea, and great father to their fi ve children. To post your comments, visit: www.theresident.com
