From the Publisher Heart of Hearts
January was generous with the snow, breaking all records. Now, the month celebrating hearts, Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month – February – comes calling. Lions Clubs from District 23C encompassing Middlesex, New
London, Tolland, and Windham Counties, named their “Humanitarian of the Year,” Bruce John of Mansfield, selected from a group of 20 non-Lion nominees. I’m truly honored to say that I was one of four finalists for the top honor, nominated by the Groton Lions Club. Receiving the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is remarkable recognition for all of my work and that of the Resident over the years. It is a highlight of my professional life. For the full story, see pages 4 and 5. On page 7, Coogan Gildersleeve, a local business with a huge heart, held their second annual fundraiser for Mystic Area Shelter & Hospitality (MASH) to help local families who are homeless. For affairs of the heart, check out a couple of great reads about love and romance page 8, recipes that love your heart on page 10, and medical advances for heart health on page 13. “CT Goes Red” campaign encourages women to join the fi ght to end heart disease on page 9. funding CT’s membership in Discover New England. See page 6. It’s Black History Month and we kick-off coverage with “Harriet Tubman’s Dream” to be performed in New London.
A great read, The Dad I Wish I Had by former NFL player, Freddie Scott II, is highlighted as well, both on page 11. Last but not least, what would the month of February be without a shout out to my little buddy, Punxsutawney Phil? Good luck on the 2nd and let’s hope beyond hope that you don’t see your shadow. See photo on page 5.

Dear Editor Dear Editor,
I am so grateful to you for supporting the Christmas pajama project at the end of 2010. Thanks to your willingness to carry an article and photograph in the Resident, folks in the area were informed and responded with numbers leading to an amazing total of 894 pajamas, allowing kids a comfortable night’s sleep this winter! Individuals dropped off pjs in ones and twos.
All those wonderful warm pajamas were given to little ones through the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center (504), Rhode Island Center Assisting Those in Need (278), Riverfront Day Care (98), Madonna House, Norwich (9), and the Johnny Cake Center in Narragansett (5).
My sincere thanks to you, Shirley Anderson For the Jammie Grammie
