PT BLOG But is it reasonable to pass laws when the state can’t hold up

really have to worry about is your one boot truck. That’s it.” And: “So the only enforcement tool the parking authority is using

is the Denver boot. But unless you have at least five unpaid park- ing tickets within an 18-month period, officials are not allowed by law to use the boot on your car.” I wonder what those enforcement trucks (video patrols con-

nected to a parking citation database) cost? Surely, you could pick up a couple of more for less than $1.3 mil. According to the folks involved in parking enforcement in Pittsburgh, they work great when they find a scofflaw. When they find one and boot the car, that is – the owner must pay all outstanding tickets plus a $300 fee. If they found only five a day, that’s $1,500 in income and that would pay for the truck and the driver, wouldn’t it?

What Happens When we Pass a Law we Can’t Enforce (Posted May 3) I have commented on this issue in the past, but it has raised

its head again. Pennsylvania has a requirement that parking meters be calibrated every three years (like fuel pumps). If they aren’t, parking tickets can be voided. So here’s the deal: There aren’t enough inspectors to check all the meters in the state, so guess what?A lot don’t get serviced on a regular basis. So if you get a parking ticket in the Keystone State, check to see if it has been calibrated. If not, take it to court. You have a sure winner.

its end of the bargain? Of course not. It would seem that if cali- bration was going to be a requirement, then there should be a “calibration fee” for each meter, and the money should go to hire, train and pay enough inspectors to do the job.And if there is such a fee, then it’s time that those in charge do their jobs, or be replaced – if you can.

Facebook a Good Thing for Business Sites? (Posted April 28) We at PT are spending a lot of time working on social net-

working sites. Our Facebook site, for example, is new, but we are growing. Become a “fan” and you can follow the blog entries there and also on your site if you so elect. I am finding that people who read Facebook are more likely to comment than those who read the PT blog. It apparently is easier and quicker. When I blog on PT’s website, it automatically appears on

Facebook, sowe get double the exposure. Not a bad thing, I guess. I know, most of you know all about this. It’s new to me. Just think: If John McCain could have gotten his arms around Facebook, maybe he would be president. JVH
