there remains a strong nucleus of originalmembers in the group. The organization, originally known as PARC Distributor Group, was formed in 1989 as a network of distributors for FederalAPD equipment. Its purposes were the exchange of information and techniques, and to provide leverage as a unified distributors
group.Member companies have since diversified into multi-line dealerships and complete systems integrators, and offer state-of- the-art technology that is versatile to serve the specialized needs of a variety of industries. In 2006, the group repositioned itself as PARC Group and
moved to higher levels of

CPF Research Grant Program
The Canadian Parking Foundation (CPF), part of the Cana-
dian Parking Association (CPA), has announced a new Research Grant Program, with two separate grants of up to $10,000 each awarded annually. It is for parking- or transporta- tion-related projects. The program’s goal is to create a body of knowledge
through progressive research and education in the field of park- ing. The research should contribute to the expansion of basic knowledge or apply such knowledge to the solution of problems in parking whichmay include, but not be limited to, operations, construction, maintenance, wayfinding, etc., that will benefit the owner, operator and user of the parking facility. The CPA’s foundation was established in 1996 to advance
education and research in the parking industry. It sponsors the biannualWorld Parking Symposium and gives awards or fund- ing to those in the parking industry who merit recognition through their excellence in this field. Full details of the Research Grant Program along with an
application form are available at www.worldparkingsympo-
sium.ca. Please note that the deadlines for applications are Jan. 1 and June 1 each year. The CPA believes this program will assist in parking operations and is an investment in the industry as a whole.

Which Competencies Can be Improved?
Brad Smart, an author, lecturer and business consultant on
“Topgrading” who has interviewedmore that 6,500 executives in depth, has released a chart of 50 competencies showing which are easy to change, hard to change and in-between. Smart’s interviews ask 16 questions about every job, “so it
becomes very clear which competencies they have strengthened or not,” he said. In the experience of many Topgrading professionals, moti-
vated people can, with training and coaching, improve their organization and planning skills, public speaking, hiring meth- ods, political savvy, self-awareness and communications skills. On the other hand, it is very difficult for hard-wired adults to
change fromdevious to honest, fromslow learner to quick study, from unassertive to strong leader, or from low energy to dynam- ic, Smart said. “It’s not impossible to change even integrity,” he said, citing
the case of an executive who was fired 10 years earlier for dis- honesty, but in that decade had been extremely honest, as con- firmed in reference checks. “He was disgusted with himself,” Smart said, “so he became committed to being rock solid in
ethics. My client hired him, and 12 years later he retired, with a solid reputation.”
