By Matt Tate A car crash Tuesday evening

(Oct. 19) on New Stock Road near Weaverville killed the passenger and injured the driver. Danielle Jackie Melrose, 18, died

at the scene as a result of her injuries sustained in the accident after the car she was traveling in ran down a 25-foot embankment, stuck a tree and came to rest in a creek. Melrose, an Arden resident, was

the owner of the 2002 Pontiac that Jonathan Lance Mayfield, 20, of England Woods Drive in Weaver- ville, was driving. Mayfield was taken to Mission

Hospitals with injuries. An update on his condition was not available as of press time Wednesday (Oct. 20). According to the report from

the N.C. Highway Patrol, Melrose was traveling approximately 75 miles per hour around 6:19 pm and headed west on New Stock Road near North Buncombe Elementary School. Te report states that the vehicle ran off the right side near a

bend in the road. Melrose then over- corrected, and the vehicle went air- borne and down the embankment on the left side of the road. Te car struck a tree on the passenger side, trapping Melrose in the car, accord- ing to Sgt. Pat Staggs with the N.C. Highway Patrol. Witnesses on the scene said an-

other car was closely following Mayfield at a high rate of speed. Staggs said investigators are look- ing to contact the driver of the ve- hicle. It is thought to be a four-door Pontiac, possibly a Grand Am, and gold in color. “We’re looking for the driver of

this vehicle as a possible witness,” he said, noting the accident is still under investigation. Witnesses also stated that while

Mayfield was able to get out of the car, he looked to be in shock and dazed from the accident. Te report stated that the posted

speed limit is 45 miles per hour. Several state troopers, two Bun-

combe County Sheriff’s deputies and the Jupiter Fire Department responded to the accident. Emer- gency personnel closed the section

of New Stock Road for about two hours following the accident as in- vestigators surveyed the scene. No alcohol or drugs were sus-

pected, according to Staggs. Both Mayfield and Melrose were

wearing their seatbelts. Te crash comes in the middle of

National Teen Driver Safety Week. Staggs said teen driving deaths

are usually attributed to youths ei- ther driving too fast or not main- taining their lane. “It’s just a tragedy, obviously,

when anybody dies on the high- way, especially when it is a young driver,” he said. Staggs said Melrose was a stu-

dent in the Buncombe County Early College program at Asheville- Buncombe Technical Community College. Several weeks ago, Melrose was

an ambassador for Gov. Bev Per- due’s visit to the school, the ser- geant added. Anyone with information on the

vehicle investigators are looking for should contact the N.C. Highway Patrol communications center at 1-800-445-1772.
