Dominating win pleases Sexton
By Robin Wilson Erwin turned in one of its
most complete performances of the season, blitzing T.C. Rober- son 40-10 on Friday (Oct. 15). Coach Mike Sexton said, “I
am extremely proud the way our boys played against a tough op- ponent, and I am most excited about the effort of our defense holding a good Roberson team to 10 points.” Quarterback Garrett Brown
had another big night, throwing 149 yards and rushing 190 yards. Tanner Brookshire also had a good night with two intercep-
tions, one of those resulting in a touchdown. “All of our receivers did a great job as well,” stated Sexton. Erwin (7-2) travels to North
Buncombe this Friday (Oct. 22). “Next week will be a challenge
because North Buncombe always plays a tough game against us. I am sure they will have a solid scheme on both ends of the ball,” said Sexton. The team is now playing close
to full strength as the regular season winds down, although EJ Taylor and Alfredo Maladono are out for the season. The Warriors conclude their season against Asheville.

Re-Elect Van Duncan Sheriff of Buncombe County
Making Progress for You...
First Term Reveals Much Progress Van Duncan was elected Sheriff almost four years ago and committed to make positive changes for the citizens of Buncombe County T ese commitments included:. • Reducing response times to emergency calls Patrol reorganization focused on lowering emergency response times and putting more offi cers on the road during high volume call times. We were able to lower average emergency response times from just under 12 minutes to 9 1/2 minutes. • Establish a strategy to combat the drug problem facing our community We have developed successful partnerships with other law enforcement agencies to include the Buncombe County Anti-crime Task Force, Highway Drug Interdiction Team, and WNC Gang Task Force. Our Highway Interdiction Team has seized $7.2 million in narcotics and money since inception. We have a strong partnership with Buncombe County Schools focusing on our youth. • Develop a summer program for “at-risk” youth T e “On-Track” program is in its fourth year and has been a great success. T rough community partnerships the program is off ered twice each summer under the direction of the School Resource Offi cers. • Improve Effi ciency Criminal Investigations was reorganized to include fi eld investigators/B&E team. We implemented much more investigative training for our detectives and established a major case squad for dealing with violent criminal off enses. Our clearance rate of cases over the past 3 1/2 years has improved 18% in 2006 to 48% in 2009. • Control Spending We implemented signifi cant changes at our Detention Center. It had been estimated that we would already be into Phase 3 of building an additional jail if numbers continued to rise; but through population

management, we have kept that number on a decline. Our Detention Center was the fi rst in the nation to be designated as a Secure Communities facility that did not already have a 287(g) agreement. Because of Secure Communities, everyone who is arrested and printed in our facility receives an immigration check by Immigration Customs & Enforcement.
Because of the hard work of Sheriff ’s Offi ce personnel and many of the reasons stated above, we have seen a decline in the Buncombe County crime rate for the past 2 years. In 2008 we saw a 3% decrease and in 2009 we saw an 11% decrease.
