The American Association of Equine Practitioners


hosted its 56th annual convention December 4 -8 in Bal- timore, MD. Texas A&M professor Bill Moyer took the reins as president. Solo practitioner Benjamin Espy, of San Antonio, was sworn in as a member of the Board of Di- rectors, elected to represent the SW District. Michael Rogers, of OSU, was one of the 8 outstanding veterinary students across the country awarded a $2,500 scholarship.


Elizabeth Solch, a member of Texas A&M Univer-


sity’s equestrian team, earned the title of Outstanding Jun- ior from the Texas A&M College of Liberal Arts. The selection was based on GPA, class difficulty, and hours completed. Solch holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in international studies with minors in economics and Asian studies. By virtue of the award, she was an honorary inductee into Phi Kappa Phi, Texas A&M’s oldest honor society.


When the ninth annual Audrey Grace Auction,


held on-line at www.pleasurehorse.com, ended in De- cember, $44,065 had been raised for the children of New Horizons. With no costs involved, ALL proceeds go di- rectly to the charity.

McKay announced on December 7 the signing of 5 stu- dent-athletes. Hunt seat rides Kayla Briel (TX) and Haley Buchmiller (IL) and western riders Megan Gunther (TX), Mollie Jacobs (OH), and Laura Sumrall (MS) will join the Aggies for the 2011-2012 competition season.

Patti Carter-Pratt, formerly of St. George, Ontario,


was named to the new position of AQHA executive di- rector of shows. She has been an exhibitor and AQHA Professional Horsewoman, and she was the 2005 AQHA


Professional’s Choice Horsewoman of the Year. She comes from a family with a long history with AQHA. AQHA Director-At-Large Joe Carter, her father, assists with monitoring at the AQHA World Show. Patti and her husband, AQHA Professional Horseman Doug Pratt, have been in the process of relocating from Ontario to Amarillo.

Glenda Pickett, of Lafayette, LA, resigned her po-


sitions as Louisiana QHA board member and youth ad- visor, effective December 13. She had served in those capacities for 5 years. This will be a big loss for the youth involved, as she was always working to make things eas- ier or better for them.

Northeast Oklahoma SHA has made some


changes for 2011, to make the shows run faster and more smoothly. ALL of the shows will be held at McClain County Fairgrounds in Purcell. Losses 68-year-old Michael Martin, of Houston, died on


November 21. He was a lifetime HLSR Committeeman who started out on the Arabian Horse committee and ended up on the Rodeo Express Team C at Delmar Sta- dium. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Heckaman, of Aubrey, died from colic complications on December 3. The 1992 bay stallion was 1996 Congress 2-YO Futurity Champion plus AQHA Jr WP Reserve World Champion that same year. He had proved to be a great sire, too, siring AQHA world champions and foals accumulating over 13,000 points.


Zippos Signature, owned by Judy Carranza, of


New Waverly, was put down in early December. Judy owned Ziggy for 14 years, and the duo were TQHA Champion of Champion’s trail champs in 1998. In 1999, Nancy Cahill rode him to earn the 1999 Senior Trail world championship. The gelding’s record shows AQHA Superiors in open trail and western riding. Judy stated, “Ziggy truly loved trail. He was all heart, and he did his best every time he stepped in the arena.”


91-year-old Ross Garrett, of Madisonville, died on


December 14. He was Madison County Extension Agent for 26 years. In 1963, he accompanied youth to the first Texas State 4-H Horse Show, which was held in Bryan, and 2 of his youngsters took state championships in key- hole race and halter geldings.
