CHRISTMAS POT POURRI SACHETS Beauty in the kitchen for December

For this little project it’s not so much Beauty in the Kitchen, but making the kitchen and your home beautiful. At this time of the year we all enjoy cooking, making up for the other eleven months when we may sometimes, crash bad temperedly around the kitchen making ‘yet’ another meal. We come over all sweetness and light at the prospect of some interesting creations and re-creating traditional favourites. All of this industry can leave the house with an ambience of cooking smells, which can be rather overwhelming. These little sachets can solve that and give the impression that you are extremely competent in the kitchen, even if it’s all smoke and mirrors. Making these little sachets as gifts mean you have a happy afternoon ahead of you matching ribbons and fabrics to the lucky recipients.

Christmas pot pourri sachets • ½ oz/15g crushed nutmeg

• 2 oz/55g whole cloves • ½ oz/15g crushed ginger • 1 oz/25g bay leaves • 1 0z/25g dried orange peel • 1 broken cinnamon stick

Mix the herbs and spices in a bowl. Crush the nutmeg and ginger gently with a hammer or other suitable weapon. You can easily dry your own orange peel by leaving it in the kitchen near a heat source over night or on the back of the Aga for an afternoon. Quite honestly, the amounts called for are a rough estimate so just use what you have to hand.

Make little bags that measure approximately 5 x 4 inches. Hand stitched, using a small running stitch is fine, as they don’t have a very hectic life. You can go as mad as you like here with fabric choices or be strikingly minimalist and use plain muslin or calico. When you have filled the bags you can secure the top with a pretty ribbon, rough twine or a quick row of tacking stitches. This is a marvellous opportunity to use up scraps of fabric and tiny lengths of ribbon left over from other outings.

Instructions for use

Fill a saucepan about half way up with water. Place the sachet into the water, when it boils turn off heat and leave the sachet to infuse the air. Discard after one use. You can say as much on the label when you are gifting one of these pretty little sachets.

A New Year, A New You! I

’ve never understood why, when we have things in our life we want to change, or challenges we need to overcome, we choose some arbitrary time such as New Year to do it. We build up our hopes and expectations, only to have them come crashing down by the end of January under the weight of unrealistic expectations.

For example, 73% of people who take out gym membership in the New Year have lapsed by the middle of February (whilst still paying their expensive subscriptions). People who embark on diets with great intentions usually lose their enthusiasm – and will- power – even before they’ve taken down the Christmas decorations. And the smokers will usually have a sneaky puff or two when the patches or nicotine gum just don’t hit the spot.

Another reason New Year’s Resolutions fail is that they are often not properly thought out. If you have a goal in mind, you need a clear, considered plan of action to ensure it succeeds. If we want to make changes in our lives, whether they are comparatively minor, or a major shift, we can’t afford to leave such important matters to a few well-meaning, but insubstantial minutes’ thought in the run-up to the New Year. Not if we really want to succeed.

It is far better to make changes as we go along, when we first identify the need. This strategy gives us the best chance of feeling in control of our lives rather than just reacting to events, which can leave us feeling powerless.

However, if New Year really is your chosen time for change, do it with commitment and success! The combination of two powerful therapies, Clinical Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can be very effective in helping you prioritise your requirements, strengthen your determination, help you to focus clearly on your goals or New Year’s Resolutions, and successfully achieve every one of them – whatever they are.

I felt as though my situation was dealt with as an individual client, not somebody trying to overcome a common issue [quitting smoking] … and really feel that I received treatment as an isolated client.” Mrs Annette Harris, Plymouth, Devon
