Artful Dodging
A look at what you can see in and around Dartmouth

hat Was That Noise..?
..it was this past year, whistling by at the speed of sound! For an
unrepentant humbug-ist such as myself (this is what I’m told I am, not what I believe myself to be!), it seems a trifle odd that I am writing of the ‘year that’s gone’ in the middle of November but, when you read this, it will be pretty close to the time for the man from Coca-Cola to pay us a visit and cost us a fortune. I’ve been trawling through what’s happened over the year and there is one thing that becomes apparent as I dip into the rock-pool of the past: we have an incredibly diverse and alive arts scene going on in this relatively small town of ours.
It made me realise how lucky we are and how many high- profile artists, from all walks, have visited us in the last year. Have a look at this! We’ve had exhibitions galore. Phil Scoble’s magnificent photos from Dartmouth; Conrad Batten, Jane Blair, Kate Marshall and, of course, Galleries Week, with such luminaries as Fran Gynn and Michael Turner. Local art groups display and there’s the yearly Dartmouth Art Society exhibition. Music is always on display, all round the town. And there’s the Music Festival that goes from strength to strength. Clare Teal paid us a visit and another Jazz heavyweight that called was the Karen Street Quartet. At The Windjammer, we saw some of the Americana greats, such as Ashleigh Flynn and, my favourites, the wonderful (and local!) Carrivick Sisters. The Red Bullets not only headlined the Music Festival but also opened the Food Festival. Classically speaking, it was a feast. We had The Coull Quartet & Bowjangles, we had Opera, we had Rock, we had Jazz and music was everywhere! The Flavel, The Windjammer, The Market House, The George and Dragon, Bellini’s and on and on. Musical Theatre and musical presentations: The
Dartmouth Players’ ‘Songs from the Blitz’ & Music Hall; K.A.T.S. presented their yearly musical at Malborough – they’re doing ‘Chess’ in 2011, don’t miss it! Theatre was ever-present, both local and visiting
companies. We’ve just had another successful Dart Drama Festival; The Dartmouth Players gave us ‘Lord Arthur Saville’s Crime’ (and don’t forget this year’s pantomime ‘Cinderella’); The Inn Theatre Company presented Dartmouth Shakespeare Week and ‘Macbeth’; visiting productions included ‘Farm Boy’, ‘Imagine I am Smiling’ and so many others, we need more space! Comedy galore, including the Comedy Festival, kept us smiling (well, some of us at least!) and then there was... well, I think you get the picture. And this is just a small selection of what’s been going on in Dartmouth and the surrounding areas. And we’re already looking forward to next year... Okay, we’re getting ahead ourselves here! As you may
know, By The Dart won’t be around in January, all the office wallahs are beavering away to get the By The Dart Business & Community Directory out in time, so the next round-up will be in the February issue. But, in the meantime, here’s a small selection of what’s happening in
December...and January.
Have You Herd..? (It’s a round-up
joke...) ‘Oh no it isn’t!’ ‘Oh yes it...might be...’
It’s not quite behind you, yet, but The Dartmouth Players will be presenting another pantomime at The Flavel on 28th, 29th, 30th & 31st December. Another wonderful, music-ridden slice of mayhem, go along and
