Eric took over the shop, and I worked for them as a paper boy. Eventually we took it on from them, so it’s been in the family for years. We try to stock what people want, as much as possible, and the fancy dress is very popular. It’s not just this time of year – every hen party has a theme these days and they want 12 sets of wings or similar, or people come in for costumes for pirate parties, school book days, Halloween. “I have catalogues of costumes and accessories and some great suppliers – I can get pretty much anything people want delivered here in 24 hours, even if it needs to come from America. But most people leave everything until the last minute and on New Year’s Eve you can guarantee we’ll be really busy.”

Ideas for costumes come and go. Often they have a topical theme, maybe inspired by a film or a news story. Wizards and blue Avatars have been favourites in recent years. “But some things are popular year after year – pirates, for example, and men always like dressing up as women! “Of course I have a new outfit every year and my wife, Julie, is brilliant at making them. We’ve got quite a collection at home now – loads of stuff – and I do lend things to people too.”
Joppy said: “A few years ago the whole thing got a bit out of hand. Dartmouth’s New Year celebrations were on the radio and people came in fancy dress by the coach load. The pubs had entry by ticket only and it was all a bit crazy. “Thankfully now it’s settled down again and it’s great fun. Whole tables of people go out for dinner all in costume and most people know each other. “I’ve got my costume all ready – this year I’m a showgirl with a purple outfit and feathers in my hair. It’s going to be great!”•
