Uniquely you It’s all about defining and expressing your own taste – anyone can buy an off- the-peg look…..but how to bring a style that’s uniquely you to fruition in your home? Easy! In that process of defining your style, you’ll discern a colour palette. You’ll notice there’s one main neutral, one main colour and one accent colour. Around each of those colours, add a few close shades to give some depth and texture to your arrangements. If it helps, spray-mount some samples and examples into a notebook to keep in your handbag.

Now you have a choice – either buy a few new pieces and blend with the decorative items you have in stock, or mix your in-stock items with some

beautifully new and simple hand-made ones.

Mind the gap

Whether shopping or making, a little upfront research helps to make good decisions. Audit your existing decorations, decorative objects, artwork etc and group by colour theme. You’ll soon see which of them fit your palette. Decide what items you’ll arrange where and detail in the notebook where things will go, on which wall, which surface etc (I sketch this out with coloured pencils in mine). Then you can see where the gaps are and write your shopping list accordingly. That and your notebook should keep your wallet safe!

Maker shaker If making is the way for you, here’s a quick and easy technique using just lightweight card and a few well co- ordinated wrapping papers. Spray- mount one or both sides of the card, depending on use and cover with the paper. Use the new material to create any number of decorative objects in different shapes. Stars and spirals are great for dangling, scored down the back and concertinaed will produce a decorative screen or backdrop. Cut the card on the curve to get a cone-shape to cover an uninspiring lampshade, pierce it and invert it around a glass bowl and you have a customised votive candle holder. For a tailored table centrepiece wrap 3 differently sized boxes in co- ordinating paper to create platforms of varied heights on which to stand candles and baubles.

Star of wonder There’s a little bit of theatrical magic in the air at Christmas. Play the good fairy and weave a spell for family and guests with your well-designed interior decoration – they know the all-year- round you, but do they know the creative star inside?
