first resort, the Verdura Golf and Spa Resort. But Sir Rocco Forte has managed it, naming his new resort Verdura, after the river alongside which it sits on the southwest coast of Sicily. Owned and managed by the Collection, Milanese-based contractors, Castelli RE have created the largest and most comprehensive resort on the island. The 203 guestrooms are clustered along two parallel rows that sweep either side of a central area overlooking a 60-metre, twin-tiered swimming pool. The overriding impressions are of space,

serenity and luxury. The resort is spacious enough for guests to hop on Italian-made Vicini bikes to get from one venue to the other – timber decked tracks criss-cross the wide lawn that slopes down to the bright white sand of the man-made beach. The coastal waters are amongst the clearest in the Mediterranean and protected due to a rare type of seaweed found here. Being built on a gentle slope allows


all rooms to have sea views. The lower Landscaped rooms do not spoil the views from the higher Courtyard rooms as they are set into the slope and have planted roofs to further reduce any visual impact. The lawn is dotted with mature palms and seamlessly rolls into the few links-like golf course fairways that sneak up close to the hotel. The scale of the resort creates an easy beat, even when busy, and this luxury, together with its physical manifestation, is hard to better.
