and stables which form the arrival area to the spa facilities. Existing openings in the walled garden were replicated, creating disabled pedestrian access into the swimming building. Five treatment rooms, a nail bar and a relaxation room are located on the first floor. A juice bar sits centrally between the reception and the gym is housed on the ground floor. Another link building connects the stable


block facilities to the Victorian walled garden, part of which now houses an infinity-edge swimming pool which can be opened up onto the garden when the weather allows. Beyond the spa, clusters of lodges are


arranged in clearings within the 43 acres of parkland. The siting of these lodges epitomises the sensitive management of the woodland, exploiting the attractive setting while minimising damage and destruction


to canopy and root systems. There is even a Bat Hotel and Barn, created to provide a new home for several different species of the local bat population. As Mark Rudrum, Commercial Director of CMR Leisure, explains, the restoration and enhancement of this natural environment has been at the heart of their mission: “Most new developments don’t have the luxury of these arboretum quality trees. To put a hotel into a mature landscape was a real challenge but we have now got the benefit – it’s what sets us apart.” There are plans to add a further 1,400 trees to the abundance of specimen trees to complement the existing woodlands, flora and fauna. Perhaps the story of Rumrum Holdings’ first foray into the hotel sector will have a fairytale ending of its own.
