removed during the construction works, restored and reinstated. The columns either side of the staircase are finished in a sheen of deep purple Scagiola marble-effect plaster. Lopez Viera explains that as these were the only columns really in proportion they were happy to make them a bold statement. Other, chunkier columns on upper floors and in the adjacent ballroom are finished in white to give them “a softer impression”. As much as possible of the original wood flooring has been re-used and the tiles in the entrance lobby are originals. The size of the tiled area has had to be reduced to account for the damaged tiles. The ballroom, taking up pretty much half of the main building, is a double height space with a surrounding mezzanine promenade. Light floods in from the tall windows and
