Architects and interior designers AWW have designed a new luxury hotel, spa and woodland homes in Cornwall for hotel sector newcomer CMR Leisure.

of an enchanted forest. Certainly, this is an area steeped in folklore. Legend has it that in 1774, miners streaming for tin uncovered a hoard of 114 Anglo-Saxon coins together with a silver chalice in the grounds of the estate. The chalice and other artefacts from The Trewhiddle Hoard, as it became known, are now held in the British Museum. But the background to the opening of The Cornwall is not so much a fairytale as it is a classic rags-to-riches story, one with humdrum coal rather than hidden gold at its core. Clifford Rudrum was born into a modest working class home in Norwich in 1925 and joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 14. During the Second World War the vessels in which he sailed on the highly dangerous North Atlantic run survived two direct torpedo hits. On returning to Bristol after the war, he worked for a dairy, canvassing new customers for milk rounds on the rapidly growing local housing estates. As he went from door to door, he saw the opportunities offered by the new estates in the north of the city. In 1949, prompted by doorstep complaints about poor coal supply, he decided to form his own coal distribution business,
