To Fellow Rotarians, Family & Friends It is hard to believe that we are already past the half way point in the current Rotary year. Therefore, now may be a good time to look back and see where we are against the goals we set at the beginning.
The reason for our Club‘s continued success over its 62 year history can in no small measure be attributed to our willingness to embrace change, admittedly sometimes grudgingly.
This year has been no exception – to name but a few; we have changed our name to incorporate ‗Upminster‘, we have a woman as our President for the first time, we have adopted the New Rotary image, our Club‘s activities are shown for all to see on our own Website and in the local media, we have signed the twinning agreement with the Rotary Club of Hermeskeil and Hunsruck and we are to- day proudly presenting the first issue of ‗The Bull‘, in it‘s new format.
May be most importantly, evolving over the years to the Club we are today, we have never lost sight of the reasons why we are Rotarians – to tirelessly work to improve the lives of those less fortunate than our- selves both in our local community and fur- ther a field.
It was a great honour for me to be elected the First Lady President of the Rotary Club of Hornchurch & Upminster for the Rotary year 2007 – 2008.
Although Rotary started in 1905, it took until July 1989 before the legislative changes took effect and women were offi- cially welcomed in Rotary – but not before the California State Appeals Court ruled that Rotary Clubs were business establish- ments subject to regulation which banned discrimination based on race, gender, relig- ion or ethnic origin.
I am privileged in this year of my presi- dency to work with a group of dedicated and committed fellow Rotarians. Our Club is enthusiastic, vibrant and active and what we have achieved so far and aspire to achieve in the future is based on the friend- ship and fellowship we share.
In the words of Charles Darwin - ‗It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.‘
The proof, if one is needed is The Rotary Club of Hornchurch & Upminster!
Margareta President 2007-2008
