several different ways is that it pays to speak up, and their congressional doors are always open.
We were fortunate to have with us several members of the Texas Legislature, Houston City Council and other elected officials from the Greater Houston region to show their support for the GHBA and to listen in on the much anticipated discussion among our region's members of Congress.
City of Houston: Historic Preservation Ordinance
The City of Houston amended the Historic Preservation Ordinance to do away with the 90 day waiting period. The GHBA along with other real estate organizations worked to amend the stricter preservation ordinance and adamantly fought to include several amendments, including requiring 67% of the property owners to affirmatively say they support a historic district for it to be created. Also included is the amendment allowing homeowners in current districts to reconsider if they want their neighborhood to keep its historic designation. The transition process for the current districts requires property owners who want the right to reconsider their previous support of the historic district to issue a petition with 10% of the district within a 30 day time period to trigger the reconsideration process.

SECO Director Dub Taylor Featured Keynote Speaker for GHBA's 8th Annual Product Expo
The director of the State Energy Conservation Office (SECO), Mr. Dub Taylor, will share with us valuable knowledge relating to SECO’s recent statewide code adoption activity and any updates on the Energy Star program. This is a rare opportunity, as Taylor will highlight vital information important to the building industry in Texas.
Under Taylor's direction, SECO helps the state make the most of domestic energy, reduce state and local government energy costs and promote cost-effective clean energy technologies. Operated by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, SECO's mission is to maximize energy efficiency while protecting the environment.
Prior to joining SECO in 1999, Taylor's public sector experience includes six years with the Texas Railroad Commission's Alternative Fuels Research and Education Division. Taylor's experience was focused in commercial real estate, property appraisal and tax consulting.
The 8th Annual Product Expo is scheduled for Thursday, November 18, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sam Houston Race Park Pavilion. This GHBA Custom Builders Council event is presented by Sherwin-Williams Paint Company. The Expo will be followed by simulcast horse and greyhound racing. Betting windows will be open in the pavilion; the bar is open until racing ends at 11 pm!
Builders, remodelers and developers may attend the Expo for free. Attendance includes food and bar tickets. Please register at www.
