PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Some Assembly Required W

By GHBA President KEVIN HOLLAND, Cervelle Homes Inc.

hen the holidays roll around each year, anyone with children knows to beware of toys labeled “some

assembly required.” The “some” can often turn into an arduous task, even for homebuilders.

Well there is some assembly required in our industry as well. New issues consistently threaten the health of our homebuilding industry and housing affordability. People who don't prioritize these issues are at the table, and it’s our job to be there too.

Help us build a better industry, by joining the GHBA on February 23, 2011 for Legislative Rally Day in Austin, Texas. Association members travel as a group to our state capitol for this bi-annual event. By showing up united in large numbers, we are able to demonstrate the importance of homebuilding to the state. Rally Day is a great opportunity to meet our state legislators face to face and discuss specific matters of concern.

The bus trip to and from Austin also serves as an opportunity to network and share information with other association members. Remember, GHBA gives back to the members who participate, whether in contact information or specific knowledge or practices, which improves the industry. As a member, you have full access to these opportunities; your job is to attend and participate in order to reap the benefits.

Another way you can help is with your financial contribution to GHBA HOME-PAC, TAB HOMEPAC and NAHB's BUILD-PAC. Funds from these political action committees support candidates who are friendly to the homebuilding industry both locally and nationally. GHBA HOME-PAC is the local political action committee. The many benefits more than pay for your contribution,

not to mention the opportunity to dialogue personally with elected officials. Take this opportunity to do something for yourself and for the industry; enroll today.

BUILD-PAC is the political action committee for our National Association of Home Builders. BUILD-PAC deals with legislative issues and candidates on the federal level. It can sometimes be more difficult to interpret the issues at this level, but as a PAC member you will stay informed.

Our association is strong because of you, the membership. I am proud of the work we do as a board of directors. We all recognize the time it takes away from our families, and I want to thank each and every one of you for your sacrifices for the goal of our association and our industry.

And don’t underestimate the influence of GHBA’s two divisions—the Bay Area Builders Association (BABA) and the Montgomery County Builders & Developers Division (MCBDD). As the years go past, I have seen first-hand how these groups have grown in strength and influence, along with impressive charitable efforts. For example, BABA’s October luncheon provided a platform for interaction between Senator Mike Jackson and the association members. This is also the case in the monthly Montgomery County meetings. I recommend you take the opportunity to attend at least one of these monthly luncheons this year.

The more events I attend, the more I learn about our industry. Take advantage of the collective knowledge of our association and its members; you won’t be disappointed.

Let’s assemble together for a better future.

P. S. — Do not forget your membership commitment!
