What we're up to...

GHBA 3rd Quarter Report Card—2010 The GHBA staff is always busy looking for ways to improve member services, advocacy and education. Following is a quick look at what the association has been up to lately.

Government Affairs • Registered first houses under Green Built Gulf Coast, GHBA's new Green Build certified program.

• Have worked tirelessly on proposed revisions to the City of Houston Historic Preservation Ordinance. In doing so we were successful, along with several other groups, in creating a fair ordinance that continues to protect property rights.

• Have also worked with the City of Houston Public Works Director to ensure that proposed revisions to the Lift Station Design Manual and cul-de- sac water lines are fair.

• The GHBA HOME-PAC has worked to support candidates for office that support our industry.

Education • More than 260 people attended classes hosted at GHBA, with an average of 13 people per designation class.

• Twenty-nine people took the "Green Building for the Building Professional" course in September.

• NAHB designation class attendance is growing. GHBA held a Healthcare Reform seminar in August which brought in 45 people, and 34 people got the Lead Renovation certification this quarter. We also held the TAB seminar “Green is Mainstream” in July. The third quarter was very good!

Membership • GHBA has added more than 280 new members to its roster so far this year.

• More than 950 GHBA members renewed their membership in 2010.

• GHBA held more than 180 networking events in 2010 – including committee and council meetings, after-hour

networking events, golf tournaments, education classes and speed sellings.

Councils, Divisions & Special Events

ASSOCIATE COUNCIL • The Associate Council held its first Dove Hunt in lieu of the council's regular meeting, with more than 40 guns hunting.

SALES & MARKETING COUNCIL • The Sales and Marketing Council (SMC) worked on preparations for the Houston’s Best event.

• Judging for Houston’s Best was very successful, pulling 14 judges from across Texas, the U.S. and Canada. Nearly 300 entries for the contest were viewed and visited and final preparations got underway for the awards event in September.

• SMC presented more than 120 awards at the 34th annual Houston's Best event (formerly PRISM) at the House of Blues. Approximately 700 people attended the gala.

• The Sales and Marketing Council brought in Charles Clark for a seminar, teaching personality selling.

REMODELORS COUNCIL • Warren Clark with BMC SELECT won the CADRE award for Associate of the Year.

• RMC was the remodel captain for Project Independence, a HomeAid Houston charity project. Donations of time, materials, labor and services including project management were key to the success of renovating and restoring five apartments and two common area bathrooms for Santa Maria Spring Branch location for

homeless female vets.

• RMC members were honored with numerous GHBA Houston’s Best awards.

CUSTOM BUILDERS COUNCIL • Held seminar featuring Joseph Lstiburek, PhD.

BAY AREA BUILDERS ASSOCIATION • Fall Fling Networking event, sponsored by Builders Post-Tension.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY BUILDERS & DEVELOPERS DIVISION • MCBDD partnered with HomeAid Houston to build a 600 square foot, climate-controlled storage unit for Montgomery County Youth Services, a not-for-profit United Way agency. By providing this facility, actual living space is freed for kids to use as a family room, game room and space for reading and relaxing. Initially, space had been so limited that essential supplies were hampering daily activity.

Marketing & Communications • On-going communications and relationship building with local media.

• Continuing PR support for all GHBA departments and charities.

• Linked Houston Builder to the GHBA Web site, with live advertising links.

• Published the 2011 GHBA Marketing Guide to assist members in budget planning and scheduling for the upcoming year.

Charity Projects • Sold two homes for the Benefit Homes Project in 2010. Proceeds benefit the Texas Children's Cancer Center, the Alzheimer's Association and HomeAid.
