levels of HDL or good cholesterol and, egad, erectile dysfunction. So even if you think it’s sexy and you think your partner thinks it’s sexy, if the parts won’t rise to the occasion, well then... Here’s the raw painful truth. As we age we lose

muscle. The more you don’t do, the more you can’t do. You burn calories at a much slower rate. Think of it this way. At age 18, popping back a few brews meant nothing. A month and several large all dressed pizzas later, you

could still easily slip into those flare jeans. Now, after a few decades of contribution to the brewing industry, the accumulation of fat burns verrrrryyyyy slooooowwwllly. Plus, if you haven’t cut back on the beer chasers such as nachos, brownies or other wondrous goodies, then your diet is making a darn fine contribution to your girth as well.

For many, society’s acceptance of the male gut as just

“one of those guy things” is worrisome. One local doctor, a GP, expressed dismay over how we’ve come to view it as a natural part of being middle aged. It’s almost as if we’re willing to admit that, sure,

we’re getting older and our metabolism is slowing, but no, there’s no harm in eating and drinking the same and lessening our physical activity to a standstill. If there’s logic in there somewhere, the health care field hasn’t yet found it. But what to do about it? You could

buy more buttons, notch more belt holes or get velcro shoelaces. These are inexpensive and simple solutions. Or you could visit your doctor, hire a personal trainer, throw away everything in the kitchen that comes in a package, and take a new found pride in being gut- less.

The question isn’t so much how

long do you want to live, but also how well.
