NBHS BlackHawks hope to rebound from ‘flat’ effort

By Matt Tate The buzz from North Bun-

combe’s first win in more than a year was swiftly vanquished dur- ing 12 punishing minutes Friday

(Sept. 17) in Bakersville. The BlackHawks allowed 41

Mitchell points in the second quarter en route to their def lat- ing 50-23 loss. NBHS Head Football Coach Carey Metts said he would not

speculate on the players’ mind- sets, but the team’s lack of ag- gressiveness was noticeable from the outset. “We just came out f lat in the

first half,” he said. “We didn’t tackle well. ... [The players] were

giving the effort. We were just not doing our assignments.” North Buncombe broke the

year-long losing streak Sept. 10 with a 14-8 victory against Brevard. Save a victory last year thanks to a forfeit from Mc-

Dowell, the BlackHawks had been on a 12-game losing streak since defeating Madison in Au- gust 2009. The Blue Devils knocked off

the Mountaineers (2-2) earlier this year in four overtime peri- ods, and there was hope North Buncombe could pick up a head of steam heading into confer- ence play with back-to-back vic- tories. But North Buncombe’s de-

fense could not stop Mitchell’s punishing running game. After trailing 3-0 after the

first quarter, more turnovers and penalties, a problem area for the team all season, again derailed the BlackHawks’ attack. Mitchell’s Troy Self had two

touchdown runs and ran an in- terception for a score during the Mountaineers’ second-quarter blitzkrieg. At halftime, Metts told the

team just to focus on winning the second half. The BlackHawks responded with Christian Jew- kes passing for two of his three touchdowns in the second half to make the score respectable. The BlackHawks (1-4) were in- side Mitchell’s 5-yard-line at the end of the game. “We started playing better and

started to crawl ourselves back,” Metts said. “But it was too late.” The coach said as the team

changing the players’ attitude after two overtime losses to Madison and Brevard by a combined eight points was key in finally breaking into the win column Tursday (Sept. 16).

Te BlackHawks blanked Mitch-

Players of the Week

Te following players were chosen by the NBHS football coaching staff as “Players of the Week” for last week’s game against Mitchell:

“We told the kids, ‘No mater what

happens, you have to move on and play the next play,’” he said. “Te kids went out with that attitude [against the Mountaineers]. Tey were confident in themselves.” Defensive end Seth Edwards and

linebacker Tyler Shelton led the stellar defensive effort. Te BlackHawks are readying

build some confidence for us,” Mc- Fee said.
