County greenway officials explore French Broad corridor

By Matt Tate Biking N.C. Hwy. 251 is a popu-

lar activity among area cyclists be- cause it is a relative flat stretch of road reaching from the River Arts District in Asheville to Madison County. Battling motorists on the narrow blacktop is not as well- liked. Te Buncombe County Parks,

Greenways and Recreation depart- ment is exploring a 15-mile green- way corridor along the French Broad River to give bicyclists and outdoor enthusiasts alike a safe route. Greenways are protected open

spaces managed for conservation and recreation purposes, usually following water features and linking parks and other cultural features. Te department organized a meet-

ing soliciting community feedback Tursday (Sept. 2) at the Neighbor- hood YMCA in Woodfin. Te Town of Woodfin would

be one of the main benefactors of a greenway. As currently proposed, one-third of the tract would be within town limits. Tere are also potential connec-

tors to the greenway at Elk Moun- tain Road, Old Marshall Highway, Goodman Road, Lookout Road, Beaverdam Creek and Craggy Bridge in Woodfin, as well as Mon- ticello Road and Fletcher Martin Road in the Alexander area. Woodfin officials have been look-

ing at obtaining easements to po- tentially establish a greenway, link- ing the new downtown at Reynolds Village to the Hwy. 251 project. Te proposed surface would be

10 feet wide, although there would likely be a need for boardwalks in some areas near wetlands. Another potential issue developers are con- sidering is the fact the French Broad River is also known to crest in areas along Hwy. 251.
