The Barns of Leicester Gillespie family barn
This old barn on North Turkey Creek was
built in the 1920s by Robert L. Gillespie. The barn originally housed horses, cattle, tobacco and hay. His grandson, Conley Gillespie, now uses it to store hay. Gillespie said his grandfather cut and
yu or
notched these logs together using a hand axe and a cross cut saw. The property on which the barn is located has been in the Gillespie family since before the Civil War. Gillespie says the wormy chestnut used
for the sides of the barn is finally starting to curl away. Photos by Catherine Hunter
