HEALING ARTS Ovarian Cancer By Li Hua, L. Ac. TCMD.
Ovarian cancer (oophoroma) is usually discovered late, spreads fast, and has a low effective cure rate. There are not any subjective symptoms in the early stages. Ovarian cancer may happen in one side or both ovaries. The main symptoms include abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and pressure, vaginal bleeding, ascitic fluid, and more. It is not clear what causes ovarian cancer. It may relate to the environment, bacteria, virus, life style, and/or nutrition. Western medicine offers surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
Traditional Chinese medicine agrees with these approaches. It also believes that ovarian cancer is related to the attacking of coldness, unbalanced diet, deficiency and imbalance of the organs, condensing of wetness (dampness), phlegm, and blood.
The combination of acupuncture and western medi- cine produces better results. Acupuncture does not interfere with western medical treatment. Acupuncture is always very safe. Before any kind of western medi- cal treatment, acupuncture may help by improving the patients’ immunity, energy levels, digestion, sleep, anxiety and depression. It also may work to remove the toxic symptoms; and prepare for the western medical treatment. During western medical treat- ments, acupuncture may help patients keep up their strength. Since western medicine uses very toxic drugs and treatments to kill the cancer cells, it often kills the good cells of the body as well. Sometimes, patients do not survive the western medical treatment due to their weaker resistance. After western medical treatment, acupuncture may assist patients in recover- ing quickly.
One week before or after any western medical treatment, Chinese natural herbs may be considered to speed up patients body balance and upgrade their immunity.
Acupuncture also may prevent ovarian cancer from forming or prevent the cancer cells expanding and spreading in other part of the body. Of course, changing life style, exercising the brain, keeping happy thoughts and eating healthy are very important, too. Practice Tai Chi Gong every day to maintain balance.
Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes preventing ovarian cancer as well as its treatment. For example, wear clean comfortable underwear; clean underwear separately from other clothes; stay away from pub- lic tubs or swimming pool; use condoms for sexual activities to prevent sexual diseases; avoid too much sex which may lower the immunity. Eat correctly. Limit sweet and sugar. Every season, check with your acu- puncturist to be sure to eat according to your own con- dition in different seasons. Balance work/exercise with periods of rest. Exercise every day. Consult with your acupuncturist or trainer to do keep a proper balance.

If your Yin is low, do more Yin exercises; if your Yang is low, do more Yang exercises. Exercise the brain with reading, painting pictures, playing games, dancing, or something different from regularly daily activities, such as, walking backward, or switch to the opposite hand to do things. Keep the mind occupied to prevent worry by doing something, such as, working in the backyard, walking a pet, watching gold fish swimming, or pray- ing.
Learn some communication skills to build good rela- tionship with people around you. There is an old say- ing, “keep other people happy and happiness will knock on your door, too.” Have a Gynecology checkup if you notice any of the symptoms above. Get acupuncture regularly to release physical and emotional stress, to raise immunity, balance the whole body, and avoid bac- teria and virus attacks.
